The Umpire Strikes Back

With everyone celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of the Empire Strikes Back this week I was reminded of this book. It came out not long after the release of the hit film. It was co-autohred by flamboyant baseball Umpire Ron Luciando. This and other books he wrote were about his days as an Umpire from 1969 to 1979. He had many bouts with managers at the plate. His biggest advasary was Baltimore Orioles Manager Earl Weaver. He threw Weaver out of so many games that they finally kept him from being an Umpire when the Orioles played. When he named his top 5 toughest managers to deal with Weaver was the first 4. Frank Robinson was #5 and he called him Weaver's protege. In the eighties for a brief time he was a sports commentator with NBC. Saddly in 1995 he committed suicide. He is best remembered for his humorus books about baseball. Along with the Umpire Stikes Back they are Strike Two, The Fall of the Roman Umpire, Remembrance of Swings Past and Baseball Lite.

NBC Fall and Mid-season shows

I just saw some previews of NBC Fall shows and Mid-seaason replacements. Well here are the previews of 2 that I liked. First is the mid-season replacemnt show The Cape.

Now this new Fall show for NBC may only appeal to people who worked in a call center but if you ever tried to order something by phone you may like it too. It's title is called Outsourced. I am so sick of these one camera shows that I can't believe I am planning on watching this. Believe me that is a compliment.

The Prisoner's Notice

When the new version of the Prisoner started this past fall I was happy. I kept hearing that they would do a movie version or a new TV series for years and it was finally here. Then when I watched it I was bored to death. I recently saw an ad for the USA show Burn Notice. I suddenly realized that the world didn't need a nother Prisoner. With Burn Notice we already had one. Lets compare the two.
The Prisoner:
1. Secret Agent quits the agency.
2. He is kidnaped and taken to a town in a tropical paradise.
3. He doesn't know who took him there.
4. He helps citizens of the village while he tries to find out who took him and why.

Burn Notice:
1. A spy is fired (given his burn notice) from the agency.
2. he is dumped in the tropical setting of Miami.
3. He doesn't know who burned him or why.
4. He helps people in Miami while he tries to find out who burned him and why.

See they do have a lot in common. The original Prisoner was more of a thinking mans action show. Burn Notice is more flat out action/adventure but it has some elements that keep the mind thinking. Burn Notice is really the Prisoner for the 21st century.

Archie's Something Else!

I may not like the new direction that Archie comics is taking but I still have a soft spot in my heart for the old Archie series. Here is one of the Christian comic books that Archie comics gave the ok on for Al Hartley to produce back in the 1970's. If they were any bigger they would qualify as graphic novels. Read and enjoy Archie's Something Else. Hopefully it will give you something to think about.

Del Shannon sings She by Boyce and Hart

I saw the above record for sale on e-bay. I never new that Del Shannon release a version of this song. I found a version of his on youtube. Normally when I am more familer with the song by somone else, in this case the Monkees, I don't like other versions that I hear. Well I have to say that Del's version is just a little bit better. Too bad his talet was always some how over shadowed. He was a huge talent. Now here is the video from youtube. Enjoy!

Korean Cockroach Commercial

I have no idea what he is singing but here is a commercial for some Korean cockroach repelant. You may not uncerstand the language but it is fun watching him dance to the music. Look at him go.

Bible Tales for Young Folks

In 1953 Atlas Comics, which later became Marvel Comics and published characters like Spider-man, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, etc., published a book called Bible Stories for Young People. Here is their version of Christ and His coming back from the dead.

Red X

I don't know if anyone can still see it but over on the right I had a comic picture of Micky Dolenz saying part of the mighty Phillips family of blogs. Now all I see is a red x. Any one know why that is and how I can get it back to the picture?

Rest in Peace Robert Culp

No matter if you remember him from Trackdown, I Spy, The Greatest American Hero or his number of TV guest spots on shows ranging from The Outer Limits to Everbody Loves Raymond, Robert Culp has been a fixture on everyones TV for over 50 years. He recently passed away at the age of 79 when he had a accident at his home. It is hard to imagine TV without Robert Culp. Of all of his roles perhaps his most iconic is that of FBI agent Bill Maxwell from The Greatest American Hero. At the time he was doing that show there were rumors that he would play another iconic role in Dallas. He would take over the part of J.R. Ewing as contract negotiations with Larry Hagman were stalled. Culp said there was no truth to the rumors and if it was offered to him he would have turned it down cause he wouldn't leave the part of Bill Maxwell. If another story I heard is true Robert Culp left his mark in another way. I Spy co-starred Bill Cosby. Everyone knows that Cosby's part broke TV's color barrier. What you may not know is that it almost didn't happen. At least not with Cosby. After seeing Cosby's acting the producer, Sheldon Leonard told Culp Cosby had to go cause he couldn't act. Culp told Leonard to wait and he would try to teach him how to act. It worked and he kept the part on the show. Since then Cosby has become another actor who it would be hard to think of TV without. Culp did guest spots on the Cosby show and joined Cosby for an I Spy reunion movie and in 1972 he directed himself and Cosby as two private eyes in the movie Higgy and Boggs. It isn't hard to believe when i heard the news today state that Bill Cosby said Robert Culp was like a brother to him.
