I found these fictional characters on e-bay who had runs for out highest office. Some were bigger then most but their companies or publicity agents threw their hats in the ring for them. Remember today is election day. So go out and place your vote.

Video trouble

Wondering if anyone is having trouble watching the videos I place on this blog. I am.  It only plays 2 secnods and then stops.  I can't find the help in bloggers helps screens or on you tube.  Let me know if you are having problms or not so I know if it is just me. If you know of a way to fix it please tell me. Thanks!

The Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Show On DVD

I just heard from David of SupermanFan.net, a reader of my blogs who even won a contest over at Mail It To Team Up. It seems that he was at TV Shows On DVD.com and he saw this article. He e-mailed me a link to it. The article tells how Mark Evanier of News From ME recently added an interview to the DVD's for the season he worked on the show.
So the series could be out next year. Keep your fingers crossed. Usually information like this follows news that a movie will be released around the same time. Perhaps we will see the Wachowski Brothers version of Plastic Man very soon. I hope so. What the world needs now is...more Plastic!!

The picture of Plastic Man that you see above I got from this site about musician and artist Richard Farina. This is the first I ever heard of him but he must have had good taste as it says his favorite comic book was Plastic Man.

On My Mind's Third Anniversary

Can you believe it was three years ago when Booksteve told me about blogspot and used it to set up On My Mind? Now over 46,000 visitors later we are all celebrating 3 years on the internet. Thanks to Pop Culture Safari I was directed to the above video at Classic Television Showbiz. Does anyone remember another Archie live series? It was in the 1970's and kind of a variety show but focused mostly on comedy. It was more like Archie's Joke Book on TV. If you know where there is any video on this please tell me and direct me to it. Thanks.

This Day In Music History: Elvis and Jailhouse Rock/Treat Me Nice

On this day in music history, October 21, 1957 , Elvis hit the #1 spot on the billboard charts with his double sided hit "Jailhouse Rock/Treat Me Nice." It was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who wrote many hits before for Elvis.
Mr. Leiber said "The love songs were a great problem, because I really can't write love songs. But that was the least of it. I certainly would never have written a song line 'Jailhouse Rock,' for example, if somebody hadn't said, Look, there's going to be a big production number in a jail."

That production number became the highlight of his third film Jailhouse Rock. Elvis himself choreographed the scene. It is one of the best remembered scenes from any of Elvis' films. The movie also opened today and became one of his biggest films in his acting career.

The Man on the Eiffel Tower

I recently heard about a movie called the "Man On The Eiffel Tower." The title alone would have gotten me interested but it was the choice of director that intrigued me. It was directed by Burgess Meredith.
I read somewhere that the first director quit over creative differences. Normally that is a phrase that is used to hide the real reasons but after seeing this movie I believe it. Young Mr. Meredith got the job when his new friend, Charles Laughton, had such faith in him that he suggested that he take over as director.
The story is really about a down and out medical student, played by Franchot Tone, is hired to kill a woman. Mr. Meredith is set up as the killer. The majority of the film is a cat and mouse game between
Mr. Tone and Mr. Laughton. The ending takes place on the Eiffel Tower where Laughton and Meredith corner Mr. Tone and he contemplates suicide in order to escape prison.
There are huge plot holes in the film. The biggest is why Burgess Meredith's character is at the scene of the murder in the first place. Late in the movie it is explained he was there to borrow money but I don't recall anytime that they told how he knew the murder victim.
The film needs a major restoration. It was filmed in color. However, for most of the film it looked almost in black and white. The poster for the film above has more color then the film now does.
This movie was a Hitchcock style film but it failed to do it's "homage" to the director justice. With a major re-write of the script that would fill in the plot holes this film could fair well with a re-make. It has a decent story if told well. I can see George Clooney in the part of Franchot Tone.

Marvel Secret Wars Omnibus

In my opinion this is one of the best team-up mini-series that Marvel has ever produced. It is mostly known for Spider-man getting a new suit that would eventually become half of Venom. However, I like to look at behind the scenes strategy. This series gave a look at both sides and created a great build up for the ending. Some didn't care for it at the time but I loved it. This Day In Music History: The Everly Brothers and Wake Up Little Susie

I am proud to say that on this day in music history, October 14, 1957, two men from my home state of Kentucky, the Everly Brothers had the #1 hit in the country on the Billboard Charts with Wake Up Little Susie. Their beautiful harmonies inspired and influenced a generation of singers like the Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel and even the Beatles.
The boys, Don and Phil, actually come from a show business family. Their Dad, Ike Everly, was part of the first singing Everly Brothers act with his two brothers. When they lived in Iowa Don and Phil had their own early morning radio show on KMA before they went to school. Don even had his own Saturday morning show called "The Little Donnie Show." Later, when the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, live radio was on the way out. So the family act left show business. Dad got a job in construction and Mom became a beautician.
However, Don wrote a song called "Thou Shalt Not Steal" and sold it to Kitty Wells. Later he and Phil made a demo tape. At the end of the session they told the studio owner they were broke and couldn't pay for the tape. When they left the studio they saw that their car had been towed. They had to go back in and ask the studio owner if they could borrow money to get their car out of impound.
The took their tape to many record companies but most of them turned them down. Columbia Records did like it and signed them to record four songs. One of them was "The Sun Keeps Shining" and it was released as their first single. It didn't sell as well as Columbia hoped.
A friend of their Dad's, Chet Atkins, introduced them to publisher Wesley Rose. He signed them to a contract. When Columbia didn't renew them Mr. Rose got Archie Bleyer to hear their demo tape. Mr. Bleyer had heard it before and turned them down. This time he was looking for a new country group for his Cadence label. After hearing the tape again he knew the Everly Brothers was the group to sign.
He had a song that was written by Felice Bryant and Boudleaux Bryant but everyone turned it down. He offered Don and Phil $64 each to record it. So they recorded "Bye Bye Love." They went on tour in the South. When they came back the song had reached #2 on the national charts. The next song they recorded was "Wake Up Little Susie." Many stations banned the song from their airwaves. Why? The times were more tame in broadcasting back then. It was thought that the lyrics were "suggesting" that Susie and her date had slept together. The song went to the top of the charts anyway and became the first #1 single for the soon to be legends in music.

I recently came across this MAD magazine send up of the old 1960's series the Fugitive. I loved it and wanted to share it with my readers for a special occasion. However, I couldn't find one. I thought perhaps It would soon be the anniversary of the first episode. I looked and found I missed it by a few weeks. That happened on September 17, 1963. I already knew I was too late for the last episode where he caught the one armed man. It aired on August 29,1967. Perhaps one of the stars was born today. No such luck David Janssen was born March 27,1931 and Barry Morse was born June 10, 1918. Even series creator Roy Huggins was born July 18, 1914. Finally I thought I would just share it to be nice and have some fun. I hope you have fun reading The Phewgitive.

I have never been a big fan of the B-52's. They were part of the 80's new wave move and I didn't get into that type of music back then. I did like their song "Love Shack." That was almost 20 years ago. Now members of that band are in their 50's and 60's. They are still preforming today and in this video the energy they still attack the song with should make bands whose members are in their 20's envious of their energy and talent. It almost makes me wish I was into that kind of music back then. Now here are...THE B-52'S!!!!

Nuts...The Final Frontier

I have been a fan of Star Trek for most of my life. From the original series to the soon to be released movie to way too many pieces of fan merchandise to cartoons and conventions I have been there or bought some of it. I thought I had seen it all until I saw this.

Own the Rights to the Theme Song of the Monkees

Chris, a person who made a comment on Let's Rap With Cap!, has his own blog site called Pop Culture in the Pumpkin Patch. While I was looking there I found this little gem. Here is what Chris had to say..."I heard an interesting pitch on talk radio today. It was from a music memorabilia vendor about a new venture where fans will have the opportunity to bid on shared rights for some of the most popular (and not so popular) songs. The first auction includes: The Monkees "Theme song", Garth Brook's "Friends In Low Places" and even "The Theme From Days of Our Lives". Evidently, the winning bidder will share in the royalties from a song. Each time a song is legally downloaded, placed in a commercial or remade for a new movie, the co-owner will receive a percentage of the earnings. Sounds like most of the auctions will be out of the average Joe's range, but it would be cool to make a buck every time the Monkees walk down the street. If I had the money I would place a bid. The auction starts in a few days on October 4th.

This Day In Music History: Jimmie Rodgers and Honeycomb

Jimmie Rodgers credits his Mother, a piano teacher, for giving him a love for music. However, his career in show business started when he was a solider station in Seoul, Korea. He bought a used guitar and learned to play it. He starting winning talent contest while he was in the Air Force. When he came back to the states he was hired to play at Nashville's Unique Club. At that club Jimmie heard another musician preform "Honeycomb." Jimmie re-arranged the song to fit his style on the song that would become the #1 hit on the charts on this day in music history on September 30,1957.
Sometime later, while he was preforming at the Fort Cafe in Vancouver, Washington, the singer Chuck Miller saw Jimmie preform. He told Jimmie he should fly to New York and audition for the TV show Aathur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and for Roulette Records. Miller was so impressed he even paid Jimmie's air fare. Jimmie won on the TV show and played "Honeycomb" as his audition for Roulette Records.
Not long after he got him Jimmie got a telegram asking him to come back to New York to sign a contract with Roulette Records. After he signed with them Jimmie had a string of hits for the label. He was given his own TV variety show in 1959. Later he starred in the movie "The LIttle Shepherd of Kingdom Come."
In 1967 he left Roulette for A&M. He was also cast in a new movie. Jimmie only released one album for his new label and never got to be in the movie.
IN December of 1967 Jimmie was pulled over by an off duty police officer. Two uniform police officers came to assist. A few hours later Jimmie's musical conductor, Ed Samuels, found him unconscious in his car. He had to have three operations on his brain and a steel plate was put in his skull. He sued the city for $11 million dollars.
It took a long time for him to recover but Jimmie returned to show business in 1969 when he preformed at a concert at L.A.'s Cocoanut Grove.

This Day In Music History: Buddy Holly and the Crickets and That'll Be The Day

On this day in music history, Sept. 23, 1957, one of the most influential artist in the history of Rock and Roll had the #1 hit in the country on the Billboard charts. It was Buddy Holly and the Crickets with "That'll Be the Day." Buddy Holly's music left an impression on every musician from the Beatles to John Denver to Elvis Costello.
The song was recorded on July 22, 1956. Decca executives didn't have much faith in the song. As a result the song wasn't released on Decca. A few months later Buddy's contract with Decca expired. IN Feb. of 1957 Buddy went to Norman Petty who produced the song "Party Doll" by Buddy Knox. They recorded a demo of "That'll Be the Day" and sent it to other record companies. Almost all of them passed on it. However, Brunswick Records, which was a subsidiary of Decca, signed Buddy Holly to a contract.
The song was still owed by Decca as "That'll Be the Day" by Buddy Holly. So Brunswick kept Buddy's name off the label and release it as by The Crickets.
In the fall of 1958 Buddy and Norman Petty parted ways and the Crickets stayed with Petty. Holly recruited other musicians to become the new Crickets. Among them was future country music star Waylon Jennings. A few months later in February of 1959 Buddy Holly, along with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash while trying to get to their next date on a winter tour.

For some reason I have cereal on my mind. I don't know why as I have not eaten cereal in years. Anyway today here is the 1973 commercial for Freakies cereal. Six years later when I had a part-time job in the summer working at a werehouse I and others who worked there remembered this commercial. There were several managers there but the one who was over them all was Mr. Moss. As you will or have already seen in the commercial the leader of the Freakies is Boss Moss. That became Mr. Moss' nickname but I don't think anyone called him that when he was around. Anyway this is the video of the week.

This Day In Music History: Paul Anka and Diana

For years I had heard that Paul Anka wrote this song about his love for his babysitter. That is incorrect. He wrote it about the crush he had on his little brother and sister's babysitter. She was 3 years older then him and turned him down. He poured his feelings out in a poem and then set it to music.
This however was not the Canadian natives first song. In school he read a book called Prestor John by John Buchan. In the book was a town named Blau Wildebeeste Fontaine. He wrote a song about the town and named the song after it. Paul was a fan of the group the Cadets and noticed that their label was in nearby Culver City. He took his song to them and played it for them. They liked it and signed Paul to a record it and release it with the Cadets singing in the background. At the age of 14 Paul Anka released his first song. The song didn't sell well and he returned home to Ottawa.
The next summer he entered and won a contest sponsored by Campbell's Soup. The contest required you to send in the soup wrappers from their cans. Paul scoured every garbage can he found for soup wrappers. He even took a job at a supermarket to be close to soup cans that were thrown away. The prize that he won was a train trip to Manhattan.
WIth $100 from his Father Paul went to Manhattan. The first person he went to see was Don Costa at ABC-Paramount Records. He showed Mr. Costa his songs. He was so impressed with the song Diana that he told Paul to have his parents come to New York to sign contracts.
ABC-Paramount released the song and on this day in music history, September 9th 1957, Diana was #1 on the Billboard charts for 1 week. England liked the song even more then America. In England the song was #1 for 9 weeks in a row.

In A World Where...There Is No Don LaFontaine

When I was studying broadcasting Don LaFontaine had the job that most of the guys wanted. He also had the voice that we all wanted. Today he died at the age of 68. For most of his career people only knew his voice. In recent years his face and name were becoming known to movie and TV audiences. I think that had he lived even greater fame was on the horizon. Still he left a wonderful broadcast and entertainment legacy as much as Mel Blank, Orson Welles, Paul Frees or Thurl Ravenscroft.
The person who is hired to do voice overs for the movies better not use his signature phrase "In a world..." Movie audiences will be too sad to hear it. He once said that he used the phrase as it was the beginning of the sentence that described the setting of the movie in one sentence. In another interview he said that his voice has been that way since it changed in school. He hated his voice till he and his friends realized he could call up the school and say he was their Father to get them all out of classes.
Rest in Peace Don LaFontaine.

Well today I start a new blog. I have always been a fan of many Marvel heroes. From the big guns of Spider-Man, Captain America and Iron Man to the lesser knowns of 3-D Man, Hawkeye and Werewolf by Night. Today being Labor Day I start one dedicated to Captain America.

Trouble with family court in Kenton County in Kentucky

If anyone has ever had any troubles with the Family Court in Kenton County in Kentucky please sign this petition. I have started this as I know of a family that is having problems with the system. He is a teenager and the boy has tried to maintain a relationship with his Dad but he has constantly abused him physically. His Dad's new wife does the same thing. When his Dad and he were fighting she took the boys glasses and told him to "beat the shit out of him." When he has returned to his Mom he would have bruises on his arms, back and legs. His Dad once had the police called on him at an amusement park for being abusive to him and his Mom had to come and get him. One time his Dad kicked him between the legs with steel toed boots. When he saw his Mom she had to take him to the hospital and he had some internal bleeding. He doesn't want to be with his Dad but he goes as the court orders him and he doesn't want to cause any more trouble for him or his Mom.
In court the Dad lies about him and his Mom. Even though the Mom's lawyer proves they aren't true the court sides with the Dad. The Mom is a good Mom. The Dad tries to make her look like she isn't. He also tries to make it look like there is something wrong with his son. There is nothing wrong with him. He is a good boy. I want him to grow up to be a good man but with this all going on that will be hard. He tried to tell all of this to the court but they just seemed to ignore him.
Also, the GAL didn't do through interviews. The GAL is to represent the children but the information isn't correct. The Judge can't check out the information the GAL gives him. So he believes whatever they tell him.
This is not an environment for anyone to live in. If you have had troubles with the Family Court system in Kenton County Kentucky please sign the petition at iPetitions online. Reform is needed in family court.

I can't believe I almost forgot this #1 song. I had been looking forward to posting it but kept putting it off. Only today did I remember it. Thankfully the song was #1 for 3 weeks. It was from August 26, 1957 to September 8, 1957 and returned for another week on September 16, 1957.
The song of course I am talking about is "Tammy" by Debbie Reynolds. It was the #1 song in the country on this day in music history.
The song broke a long run of male domination for the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. Gogi Grant was the last woman to have a #1 song on that chart. That was in July of 1956.
The song was helped to the top of the pops with it being the title track to the movie "Tammy and the Bachelor." It starred Debbie and Leslie Nielsen. Debbie sang the song in the movie and it was nominated for an Oscar. She sang it on the Academy Awards on March 26, 1958.
Debbie sang the song only accompanied by a piano. Not satisfied with that they added more before putting it into the film and added a Henry Mancini arrangement. Coral Records didn't have much faith in the song but released it anyway. When the song hit #1 it helped to boost the movie and a film franchise was born.
Debbie has had a professional and personal life that has been fodder for the tabloids ever since. In 1966 she became the first and so far only #1 artist to play the life of another #1 artist.
