Roy Rogers Archives Vol. 1

Here is another Dark Horse Archives that is available for pre-order at Amazon.com. I love it that Dark Horse is reprinting these old series for all of us to enjoy once more. Click on the link below to pre-oreder the book.

Herbie the Fat Fury Archives Vol 1.

I just saw over at Dark Horse.com that they are going to release the archives of Herbie the Fat Fury. Here is what they had to say about it.
Make way for the Fat Fury! The unlikeliest superhero of all time makes his mark in this new Dark Horse archival series. Coming from the strange, wry imagination of classic comics scribe Richard Hughes (writing as Shane O'Shea) and artist Odgen Whitney, Herbie Popnecker looks like a plump lump, but with his collection of supernatural lollipops, there is pretty much nothing that he can't do.

* Herbie Archives Volume One is the first of a new archive series collecting the finest works of 1960s comics publisher ACG.
I loved Herbie when I was a kid and now more generations can read about him. You can pre-order it at Amazon.com if you click on the link below. Also below is the free preview that Dark Horse had on their site.

A Letter from Martin Pasko

I love finding letters in old comics that are from people who went on to become professional writer or artist in comic books years later. Here is a letter from future comic book writer Martin Pasko from World's Finest Comics.

Plastic Man Header Contest

Just giving a heads up that I am thinking of doing a contest for a new header at Plastic Man Platitudes.
The specifics are that the size should be 706 pixels wide and 215 pixels high. Of course it must include Plastic Man. I don't care what shape he is in but, and I know this seems odd considering what my header has now, but I am tired of seeing him with his neck stretched. If possible please try not to have him like that. Now I don't know what I can give as a prize. There is nothing new that DC is coming out for Plastic Man and I was hoping to have the contest over by the end of September. So if you plan to enter the contest and have an idea. What I can offer leave a comment or e-mail me. I may decide on something else but I will at least have some options.

Save the Aquaman Hoodie

Over at Aquaman Rob has been talking about the above Aquaman Hoodie. The company stopped production on it as they didn't have enough pre-orders as they needed between 150-200. Well Rob's Aquaman site directs you to It's A Cold Day in Atlantis. There you can indicate if you want to pre-order the hoodie and therefore save the coat.

Videos of the Week: Weird Al with My Bologna and The Knack with My Sharona

I actually wanted to only showcase the Weird Al song but some may not get it without hearing the real song that he is spoofing. So here are Weird Al with My Bologna and the Knack with My Sharona. By the way the Weird Al video is an amateur video but it is pretty funny.
First is The Knack with a clip from the film Reality Bites.

Next is the amateur video with the Weird Al version of the song.

Barry Allen's Coming Back Tonight!

Have you heard the news?
It's all over town!
If you ain't heard it boy you better sit down!
Grab a hold of something and hold on tight!
Barry Allen's coming back tonight!
All the villains are getting ready to fight!
Cause Barry Allen's coming back tonight!

He was sad!
DC got mad!
But now DC says that it's all right!
All the villains are getting ready to fight!
Cause Barry Allen's coming back tonight!

Ok so he isn't coming back tonight but the parody of the Bob Seger song wouldn't have made sense without saying tonight. Actually according to what I read on Comic Coverage who got his info from Newsarama.com Barry will be brought back next year in a mini-series called The Flash:Rebirth and written by Geoff Johns with art by Ethan Van Sciver.
I, and many other fans at the time, hated it when Flash was killed off in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Supergirls death in that series made the news but to me the really sad news was Barry Allen died. He did die a heroic death as all would have died if he had not sacrificed himself. I hope his rebirth doesn't detract from that but even if it does I am happy. I read Flash for years so I kind of grew up with him. To me I will be reunited with an old friend. In the interview with the creators over at Newsarama.com they say they want to make Flash a pillar of the DC Universe. That strikes me as odd because I always thought he was one.
While Wally West was a good Flash he never became a pillar of society like Barry Allen did. In fact Wally was closer to that ideal as Kid Flash more then when he became the Flash.
Still Flash fans can rejoice. The greatest of the Flashes is soon to return. Barry Allen is coming back! I hope he decides to stay.

The Brave and the Bold Trailer

You may have already seen this but here it the trailer to the new Brave and the Bold series. I can't wait to see this. Especially the one with Plastic Man.

My Old College Buddy...Kwicky Koala

Recently I was reading an old comic book and I saw an ad for the Saturday morning cartoon show Kwicky Koala. Now why does Kwicky Koala remind me of college? It was 1981 and I was a Sophomore at Northern Kentucky University. I was majoring in Radio, Television and Film Communication and one class said we had to design TV Station for Louisville, Kentucky. I don't know why they didn't give us Cincinnati, Ohio. It was only a half an hours drive from the school and Louisville was about two hours.
Anyway part of the project was to get copies of the major local stations program guides. So one day I drove to Louisville. My friend Chuck came along for company. At the first station I was shocked to get a glimpse of the more seamy side of broadcasting. We were greeted by a very pretty receptionist and waited for the program director. Out came a middle aged balding man. He seemed a bit full of himself. He took us into the meeting room and gave us a copy of the program guide and answered all my questions. At some point the receptionist and another pretty woman came in and while he talked to us both woman caressed him on each side as if he was James Bond. Later when we left I passed the receptionist and thanked her. She said "You're welcome!" Then gave me wink. As I left I made a mental note to not work for that station if I was offered a job.
At the next station the program director was a woman and everything was going fine. That is till I started mentioning some of the network shows I thought they had on TV. I was in such a hurry to get there that I mixed up the shows and was mentioning shows that were on their major competition in town. We got all the information I needed but was very embarrassed when I left.
The last station the program director wasn't able to see us. However, the station engineer said he could get us the information that we needed. He only had a few minutes and we had to get there soon.
Oh! I forgot to mention that we had parked the car and were walking all over the city to the stations.
Anyway Chuck and I checked our watches and noticed that we only had a short time till then and we started running. We started running faster and faster and it started to become a race. Chuck was about a foot or two in front of me. Suddenly, as we came to an alley, Chuck came to a sudden stop. I saw this as a chance to take the lead. As I stepped into the middle of the alley street I saw an armored car barreling down the alley. He came to a sudden stop and it jolted the man in back with the gun. I half jumped away from the armored car. I didn't want to do a full jump as that would have put me in the middle of the busy street and I still could have gotten hit by a car.
I was half in a daze as I walked towards Chuck and didn't realize I walked past the gun port. Chuck had closed his eyes and flattened himself against the building. Later he said he was stunned when I had came over and grabbed his arm. When I jumped to avoid being hit he thought that the car actually did hit me. Later Chuck told me about the gunport and he hugged the building so he wouldn't get shot.
We went our way and joked how about what our families would have thought if we died and made the papers. Headlines would have read "Two Men Die In Daring Armored Car Robbery!"
We had a good laugh at that. Then we checked our direction and noticed we were going the wrong way. We had to turn around and run even faster to make up the time. We made it by the skin of our teeth. As we got there and asked for the engineer he came off the elevator. He asked if we were the two who called him and gave us the information. The three of us were all smiles as we said goodbye. Chuck and I rushed back to the car and headed back home as Chuck had to be at work that night.
Oh! I almost forgot. Why does Kwicky Koala remind me of this college project? While Chuck drove back I looked at some of the program information and for the first time I saw the name of the Saturday morning program "The Kwicky Koala Show." After such a stressful day that name seemed funnier to me then it should have and I laughed as hard as I ever did. Chuck got a good laugh too. To this day I have never forgotten that day and Kwicky Koala has always reminded me of it. I have never seen the show but I may get to one day.

Give A Show

Before you could buy cartoons for the kids to watch on DVD. Before you could buy them on VHS. Even before you could buy them on Beta there was the Give-A-Show Projectors. The item that would take a strip of celluloid and project the images on the wall or a screen. Kids would read the story from the words on the bottom of the strip. Eventually they started to come with a record that had actors telling the story. Well there is a site dedicated to this old art form called The Give-A-Show Projector Blog. It's a fun site that wasn't started by me but by Jon of Random Acts of Geekery fame. Click on the link above and check it out.

Paul Grill Master

I saw this photo over at the Beatle Photo Blog and at first I laughed. It seemed like at joke to have Paul McCartney barbecuing in the backyard. I thought someone had photoshopped his head onto someone else. The farther I read it told how he was making veggie burgers. So it wasn't quite as funny but I still have to smile at this picture.

This Day In Music History: Elvis and (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear

Somehow word got out to his fans that Elvis collected Teddy Bears. He didn't but fans from all over the world sent him Teddy Bears for his collection. He didn't have one before the rumor started but he did now.
Songwriters Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe got wind of the rumor. They had to write a new song for the new movie that starred Elvis and Lizabeth Scott called "Loving You" and wrote (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear. Elvis recorded the song in March of 1957. It was released only a few short weeks later in 1957 before the movie. The movie had Elvis playing a rock and roll star and there were many scenes with Elvis in concert singing. Two of the concert goers in one scene were his parents Vernon and Gladys Presley. After his Mother died in August of 1958 Elvis would never watch that scene again.
The song became a #1 hit on the Billboard charts on this day in music history July 8, 1957. The next day, July 9th, the film was released. The song was a great advertisement for the film.
What happened to Elvis' Teddy Bear collection? The day after Christmas in 1957 Elvis donated it to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.

Ephemera posting

I was recently asked by Marty of Ephemera a blog site for collector's to write an article to be posted on the site. I did it about comic books of course. You were expecting political science textbooks perhaps? Anyway the post is to be on the site on July 10th this week. Click on the link above and read it later this week.

Boston Album Covers

I was in a music department yesterday and Boston's Greatest Hits caught my eye. I was never a big fan of their music but I did like a couple of their songs. The album art was always eye catching. The style, even if it was release in the 90's like their greatest hits, always screamed 1970's to me. Here are the albums I am most familiar with.

What would a 4th of July weekend be if we didn't hear from or at least discuss the Beach Boys. Over at Forgotten Hits Kent talks about the group from the years 1973-176 and what I consider their dumbest move yet. When they moved to Holland. At least they got a good song out of it.

Dial B does the Hawk and the Dove

Here is a shout out for Dial B For Blog. Robby is giving us a look at my favorite 60's superhero duo the Hawk and the Dove. Robby taught me a couple of things I didn't know. Did you know the reason Steve Ditko left DC was because... Maybe you should go to his site and read about it.

When I was searching for a DC Comic book character to start the site that eventually became Plastic Man Platitudes, high on my list were the Hawk and the Dove. They came in second only because Plastic Man had been around longer and I thought I could find more on him then I could the Hawk and the Dove. I believe I was right but I still wish I had started a Hawk and the Dove site.

The Switchblade Comb

I saw this ad today in an old comic book and it reminded me of a Christmas gift I once got from a cousin. I had not even noticed this ad in my comic books at the time so this was a great surprise to me. I had thought it was clever that someone invented a comb that could pop out of the handle at the touch of a button.
Now I have to admit to a nervous habit I have. When I am nervous or thinking I tap to the tune of music. Maybe it is playing on the radio at the moment or maybe it is a song I am thinking of at the time. I have done this with mostly pens and pencils and at times a comb and nothing ever broke. So I wasn't thinking when I started doing it with this comb while it was ejected out. When I looked down I notice that half of the teeth of the comb were missing. Here it was Christmas day and I had already broken my gift. I still used what was left of it and even after the rest broke off I kept old toothless around as I still like it. Maybe one day I will see a switchblade comb for sale and get it again as I still think it is kind of neat.

Monkeemen Will Come To The Rescue This Friday

This Friday Dial B For Blog will be posting their article on the Monkeemen. As always it should be a fun read.
The above picture came when they reunited in 1997 and cut a new CD and toured England. I remember that sometimes on the show The Monkees went into a phone booth and changed into their hero guises. I prefer to think of this photo before their change and that the Monkeemen were coming to the rescue of their fans 30 years later.

"The Pledge of Allegiance" by Red Skelton

On this site I had posted a link to a site that recently a person commented on and it brought it back to my memory. The site I linked to is still up & I believe that as the 4th of July approaches and the current state of the world others still need to hear it.
Just found this site. The late Red Skelton talked on his TV show about the respect that he had for a teacher he had and how he taught them the Pledge of Allegiance. It is a beautiful word for word definition of the pledge and we should all hear it. You can go to this link by clicking here. or click on the title above. You can read it and hear it on that site. Marvel In-House Ad

I just saw this old Marvel ad from the 1960's and had to share it. Usually they would have your Marvel salesman on the page as Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man or a member of the Fantastic Four. Not this time. Here they use a Thor villain called the Executioner. When was the last time he was used to sell something?

Monkeemen to the Rescue

I just saw this and wanted to let all Monkee fans know that the comic book site Dial B For Blog will have posting on the Monkeemen. I always enjoy Robby's postings and his innovative photoshop covers that you can see above. The sad part is that it won't be ready to read till June 2oth. Till then he will have postings on the death of the Martian Manhunter and on this friday the Hulk to coincide with the new movie opening.

Coming To Your Audio Rescue It's Super CD

I ust found this site for superhero theme songs. It is called SuperheroCD.com. Almost every song you cna think of for superheroes has been put on these cds. It must be very new as even the promos for the Iron Man movie seem to be on it. I am hoping for a Wonder Woman song I heard years ago that I can't find anywhere. The photo above is not part of the art for the CD but I would be surprised if the stories and songs from this record are not on there.

This Day In Music History: Pat Boone and Love Letter in the Sand

On this day in music history, June 3,1957 Pat Boone had the #1 song in the country on the Billboard Charts. Having grown up in a Baptist church in Tennessee Pat thought that his faith and conscience would prevent him from having a successful singing career. For a time he thought of becoming a preacher or a school teacher. He said it wasn't until he had sold millions of records and had a couple of million dollar recording contracts that he thought he could make a career out of singing.

For a time Pat made recordings of songs that were first written and recorded by R&B artist, like Otis Williams, Fats Domino and Little Richard, who were having a hard time getting played on mainstream stations. He took some heat for that as some thought he was keeping those same artist from breaking into the mainstream. Actually it helped them get into the mainstream. Pat, along with others who covered the songs, got their message out and eventually teenagers sought out the original artist recordings. When you combine these cover hits from Pat and his own hits he is the second most successful recording artist during rock and rolls first decade. He is second only to Elvis Presley.

Hollywood soon called on Pat and he was cast as the lead in the movie "Bernadine." There weren't any songs in the script but the producers knew if you had an actor who was better known as a singer you need to have songs in the movie. A title song was written for the film by Johnny Mercer and a song Pat had already recorded, Love Letters In The Sand, was added to the score.

Randy Wood was the owner of Dot Records, where Pat was signed to, and he also owned a record store. He kept getting request for Love Letter In The Sand which had been recorded earlier by Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby. So he knew in advance that the song was hot!

The movie producers asked Randy if he had a song Pat already recorded that they could use in the film. He gave them Love Letters In The Sand.

Pat has said that the appeal of the song has always been a mystery to him. There is nothing exciting about the arrangement or the way he sang the song. However, it is his most successful single that he has ever recorded. It was #1 on Billboard for 5 weeks and was on the charts for 23 weeks.
