Brave and the Bold: Enter the Outsiders

This is the hardest review I have had to write on this series. It is hards because I have loved every episode. Even the Ted Kord-less Blue Beetle one. However, I had mixed feelings regarding this one.

I loved that they teamed up Batman with Wildcat and that he was Batman's boxing instructor when Batman was starting his crimefighting career. I just didn't like how they made Wildcat to look and sound like he was old enough to be his Grandfather. I always thought of Wildcat as being only 10 years older then Batman. Not 30 years older. Still it was thrilling to see Batman do battle with Wildcat at his side.

Next I had a trouble with making the members of the Outsiders so young. Especially my favorite Black Lightning. A Fan site for Black Lightning was one of my earlist sites and I was happy to see him on the show but I was hoping for a team-up with the more adult version. Wildcat had a sly comment when he said "It takes more them some "Static Shock" to take him out." They combined BL and SS to come up with this version to lead the Outsiders.

But if Tony Isabella is reading this we all know that it was BL and I hope they pay you for it since you are his proud Father. Don't get cheated out of money that you should have.

I know I have not read every comic book so the underground Fagin like character of Slug may have appeared in another book. However, to me he looked like the old Black Lightning villain Tobias Whale.

Once I got use to these differences I liked how they ended the show. The Outsiders save the life of Wildcat and he becomes their role model and trainer. If there is a spin-off series I guess it will be called Wildcat and the Outsiders.

The part I really loved was the mini team-up teaser with B'Wana Beast. I have never read a story with B'Wana Beast but this made him look fun, adventurous and cool. Yes to me he looked cool. I hope B'Wana Beast gets an action figure along with others from this series.

Happy Birthday Elvis

I can't let this day go by without saying Happy Birthday to Elvis the true King of Rock and Roll. Without him Rock and Roll wouldn't have been the same. Perhaps his best known song that is known by even people who aren't Elvis fans is "Hound Dog." In honor of his birthday here is John Lennon, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bon Jovi and Elvis himself singing his most famous song.

No Plastic Man Series to Spin-Off From Brave and theBold

I recently sent an e-mail to James Finch after Plastic Man's apperance on Brave and the Bold and asked if there are plans for a Plastic Man series. Here is what he said.

Thanks for the email! As you probably know, Tom Kenny did a Plastic Man Pilot several years ago that did not make it to series. I know everyone at Warner Bros. Animation is excited about the character and Tom’s fantastic work on Batman: The Brave and The Bold. There are no immediate plans to spin off Plastic Man that I am aware of, but as you know it all comes down to the fans.

Keep your fingers crossed and let me know if you hear any rumblings from the fans!

If you have any questions or are available to do interviews with our talent – drop me an email and I will set you up.

If you notice that last sentence I would love to do an interview with any of the talent. Problem is Ihave enver done one so I don't know what I should ask. The Smithsonian Channel is showing a documentary on the Monkees. So far the air date is Jan. 10th. I was honored with an advance showing of the documentary and honored that the Smithsonian has taken an interest in doing this for my favorite band and one of my favorite TV shows. The program seems a little cynical towards them to me but you make think otherwise after you see the show. Below is the promo video for it and it is our video of the week. I am in a Monkees mood since yesterday so here is Davy and Micky on a British show. Promoting their play "The Point."

Marley and Me (spoiler)

If you haven't seen the movie "Marley and Me" then don't read this post. I saw it yesterday and it is a wonderful film. During Christmas vacation I have seen this and the new Jim Carrey movie "Yes Man." While I liked them both "Marley and Me" is the best but I left it feeling sad as compared to how good I felt after "Yes Man." You see at the end of "Yes Man" Jim Carrey learned a lesson in life and everything was better. At the end of "Marley and Me".....stop now read no further if you plam to see the movie no matter what I say. Just remember this I don't recommed that you take children to see it even though it is a family film.

Ok so I assume that the only ones left in the room reading this are those who have already seen it or will see it anyway. At the end of "Marley and Me"....Marley dies. Yes the real star of the movie and the best character in the film is killed off. Now at some point you can see it coming. After all it is about the life of the family dog and dogs don't live as long as humans. I was fighting back the tears myself but what really got to me was a young girl who was crying her head off. I mean she was really bawling and you could hear her all over the theater. The theater was full of people and she didn't care that everyone could hear her. I felt so sad for her. I wished I could take her in my arms and tell her everything was going to be ok. I had to leave early as, well I'm a guy and I didn't want to take a chance I would start to cry. I watched the ending of the movie as I left and the credits were rolling by the time I got to the door.

On the way out I heard some teenage girls making fun of the girl who cried during the movie. One said she knew it was sad but the girl ruined the moment when she started crying. I thought how cold and hard hearted they sounded. The crying girl to me seemed to have a rare and beautiful heart. Something touched her and she didn't mind if anyone knew how she felt. I wondered to myself if I and my friends were like that when I was a teenager. I hope not.

If I had known that the movie was that sad I wouldn't have gone but then I would have missed out on a great movie.

Monkee Day

It has been awhile sine we have celebrated Monkee Day here at On My Mind. Well today is the day as it is the Birthday of both Mike Nesmith and Davy Jones. Happy birthday to you both. Also, I have been told that the Smithsonian Channel is planning to air a documentary on their group in January.
Since today is the anniversary of the birth of both gentlemen below is a clip from their show featuring them together.

Trials of O'Brien Paperback

To my knowledge this is the only paperback made based on the short lived TV show the Trials of O'Brien which, as you can see, starred a young Peter Falk. I like how they call the show a great new CBS-TV Network Series. These days the book would be released before the show was on the air and the blurb would say it was the great new hit show. At least back then the hype tried to be more honest.

Rest in Peace Eartha Kitt

I just saw that one of television's Catwoman and singer of the popular Christmas tune "Santa Baby", Eartha Kitt, has died of colon cancer at the age of 81. My Dad died of the same cancer. While cancer of any type is scary to have there are some that over time have become more curable and less scary then others. I hope one day to hear that colon cancer is one of the more curable ones. I just wish they could have done that before my Dad found out that he had it.

I just learned from
that Davy Jones has released another Christmas CD. Davy must love Christmas. He released his first Christmas CD twice and it contains the best version of Silent Night I have ever heard. Now comes his newest one of which you see the cover above. He did a special study to find out what Christmas means to everyone and found that most of what they think about are kids, Reindeer and

Dr. Who Meet Dr.Who

I just saw this video "Time Shift" They have a clever why of having the current Dr. Who meet the 5th Dr. Who. The ending I believe is how the creators of the current series must have felt about the 5th Dr. It ends with them doing the intro to one of the Dr.'s Christmas episodes.

It's Saturday morning and time for the Saturday morning cartoons. Today in keeping with the season today I am showing one of the best animated Christmas episodes ever. It is from the first Flintstones series and Fred tries to earn extra Christmas money at a department store but winds up...well just watch it and find out what happens. Believe it or not this episode is a musical. I love it when Fred sings why Merry Christmas is his favorite time of year.

Again I have to say WOW! I know I have posted contest in the past few months on my sites but this time I entered one on Comic Coverage. It was called White Christmas and you had to name the most of 18 characters whose name had the word "white" in it. I knew 14 thinking I may lose. I mean there had to be someone who knew all of them but Mark said I submitted the winning entry. My prize is a DVD of The Christmas Story. McHale's Navy: The Big Impersonation

I saw this episode of McHale's Navy and I had to post it for one reason. I don't remember the show ever being shot in color.

Rest In Peace Beverly Garland

I just heard that actress Beverly Garland died December 5th after a long illness. She made her film debut in the movie D.O.A. in the 1950's. She made many B grade movies but to many she is better known for her television work. From 1969 to 1972 she played Barbara Harper Douglas on the hit sit-com "My Three Sons" when her character married Steve Douglas played by Fred MacMurray. This was the first time I had ever seen her work and the one she is best known to me and others of my generation. In the 1980's she co-starred as Kate Jackson's Mother on "Scarecrow and Mrs. King." In the 1990's she had a recurring role on "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" as Ellen Lane. From 1997 to 2004 she had the role of Ginger on "7th Heaven."
She also owned and operated the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn with her husband Filmore Crank. Her husband passed away in 1999 and Beverly ran the Inn till her death. Her daughter Carrington Garland played Kelly Capwell on the soap opera Santa Barbara.
Television won't be the same without a chance to have a visit with Beverly Garland. She will be missed.

Brave and the Bold Third Episode

Was there a third episode of Brave and the Bold shown tonight? You see I have been taping them so I can see them at a later date and to share them with a Batman fan who doesn't have cable. However, in the post holiday rush I forgot to set up the VCR and tape it. I have been looking on the internet and Cartoon Networks site to see what time they would re-run it on Saturday morning as I was told they did the first 2 that way. I haven't been able to find that out. If anyone has the answer please let me know. Thanks in advance.

The Beach Boys and Annette

My Conversation With Jughead Jones

Last night I was home after getting home from the family Thanksgiving gatherings. Suddenly the doorbell rang. I took a peak out the window to see who it was and to my surprise it was Jughead Jones. As I opened the door to ask him in Jug greeted me like I was an old friend and not just someone who only had a couple of phone conversations with him.

On My Mind: Well Jug this is a surprise! It's good to see you.

Jughead Jones: Same here!

OMM: Have a seat and relax.

As he sits he sees the Archie Christmas CD on the end table.

JJ: I see you already bought our reunion CD.

OMM: Yeah! I love it.

JJ: I'm glad. It's really the reason I'm here. I was passing though on my way to a personal appearance to promote the CD and wanted to say I was sorry I didn't tell you about it.

OMM: That's ok! I didn't even think about that.

JJ: Life has been pretty busy for me lately and it completely slipped my mind to call.

OMM: Really Jug you don't have to worry about that. But how did it come about? Last time we spoke was a year ago and it wasn't going to happen. So this reunion CD was a big surprise to me.

JJ: Well not only did Reggie have bad luck with the Banana Splits but Josie and the Pussycats didn't happen either.

OMM: Why not?

JJ: That's a good question. Let's just say that Alex Cabot...

OMM: That's the Pussycats manager right?

JJ: Yeah! Anyway he and Reggie couldn't come to an agreement. So Reggie came to Riverdale to meet with us. It must have been meant to be because Veronica also came for a visit and didn't know Reggie was going to be here.

OMM: So that's just how it came to be? But why a Christmas album?

JJ: Well it was part out of necessity and part because we all love Christmas. But for some reason Archie didn't want to sing on all of the songs.

OMM: But he is the voice of the Archies!!

JJ: I know! We all thought how can we do a reunion album without Archie singing. He said we all had excellent voices and we need to showcase that more.

Before he continued I thought I should be a better host and ask Jug if he wanted anything to eat or drink.

JJ: No thanks. I am still full from my Thanksgiving meal. Contrary to popular belief even my stomach can get full. Now where was I?

OMM: You were saying how you all got to sing on the CD.

JJ: Not really all of us but Betty and Veronica. I told Arch I over heard Betty and Veronica say how they were looking forward to Christmas. Then they started harmonizing to Christmas Caroles and they sounded amazing. I think it was Reggie who said if we started now we could get a Christmas CD out before Thanksgiving. That started the ball rolling.

OMM: But Reggie didn't produce the CD. How did it help him out from being sued for not delivering before?

JJ: The record company gave Reggie a lot of extensions and were about to follow through on the lawsuit when we signed the contract. They were still angry that it took so long to get us and said they wouldn't sue but Reggie couldn't produce the album.

OMM: After all that work Reggie must have been mad.

JJ: He was but he worked it out that he could sort of executive produce it but had to come up with the person who would actually produce it. He contacted the groups old friend Ron Dante and he got the CD out in time for the holiday season.

With that Jug had to go. Maybe sometime I can get to interview Ron Dante himself. I don't know what I would ask but it would be fun to do.

Brave and the Bold's Second Episode

The second episode of the Brave and the Bold continues to entertain with its fun look at Batman. This episode started with Batman and Plas in pursuit of the Gentleman Ghost. I was at first a little upset when Plastic Man was distracted by all of the money that Gentleman Ghost lost. Batman was having some difficulty in arresting GG. Suddenly out of no where he gets help from Fire. Batman puts special handcuffs on GG just as Plas arrives. Batman makes Plastic Man give back all of the money.
On the way back home in the Batplane Plas argues with Batman on how he treated him. Batman says he deserves it as he went to the wall for O'Brian with the parole board and the League. It seems in this version Batman is partly responsible for O'Brian becoming Plastic Man. He was with Kite Man and his gang and in the middle of a robbery when Batman stopped them. As O'Brian was getting away on his own with the money Batman knocked him into the vat. Out of guilt Batman got him to turn states evidence and later told the parole board that he would be responsible for his rehabilitation. So it was a little easier for me to over look Plastic Man's bout with his greed as it was still early in his crime fighting career. However, I prefer his original origin that is Batman free. You know the one where he is shot and the chemicals from a vat spill into the wound. The gang leaves him behind and later a monk is who points him in the direction of rehabilitation.
Suddenly on the way back they find Gorilla Grodd and his men taking an ocean liner. They fail at stopping him when Grodd uses a mind control device to hypnotize Batman. Bats is heading straight in a missile till Plas wakes him up. The missile still destroies the plane but Plastic Man has grabbed Batman. Plas takes on the shape of a glider and as Batman holds on they hang glide to Dinosaur Island where Grodd is hiding out.
Now here is one of my favorite scenes. They come across some electric eye beams and wonder how they will get through that maze. Plastic Man says "They didn't call me the Eel for nothing. Follow me." Plastic Man snakes his way through the maze and Batman follows his trail. Thanks to Plas they made it through with ease. Still at the end Plastic Man accidentally hits a button and alerts Grodd to their presence.
After a battle Batman is captured and now it is up to Plastic Man to help Batman escape.
Batman is held prisoner and Grodd tells his plans to take over the world by making every one into gorillas. Batman works his way out but during a battle is still changed into a gorilla.

On the way to help Plas stops to take all of the gold and diamonds that Grodd had stored up. Still he arrives in time to fight by Batman's side. Grodd presses the button to change everyone in the surrounding area in gorillas. It has the opposite effect and changes the gorillas into humans. I had to laugh when I saw the now human and hairless Grodd realize that during the battle Batman changed the ray to do the reverse.
Plastic Man gives back all the diamonds and gold that he took from Grodd. Batman turns to leave. Plastic Man ask why he isn't counting it. He tells him it is because he trust him. As Batman walks away Plastic Man takes a diamond out of his ear and places it on the pile.
Grodd is put in prison. In the end Grodd is hanging from a bar, eating a banana and plotting his revenge.
Like the first episode it was fun to watch. I can't wait to see next weeks show.

Superhero Unaired Pilots

Over at Comics in Crisis Brian has talked about live action superhero series. He did a pretty good job at covering them. Still, no matter what the genre, for every hit series on TV there are those that didn't make it to series.
The "Adventures of Superman" was a smash hit in the 1950's. After his death studios still wanted to find a way to cash in on Superman's popularity. In 1961 a pilot for "The Adventures of Superboy" was shot in hopes to have another hit. This actually looked pretty good from the few clips I have seen. It stars Johnny Rockwell as Clark (Superboy) Kent and Bunny Henning as Lana Lang. It showed his adventures that he had with his friends in Smallville. Eventually the character of Superboy had two hit shows. The syndicated "Superboy" and the CW's "Smallville." However, this series didn't get picked up as a series. Hopes must have been high as I have heard that at least 12 scripts were written so they could go straight into production.

While it is understandable that Superboy could have been a hit I have to wonder what they were thinking when they thought of "The Adventures of Superpup." This pilot was actually shot in 1958 before the Superboy pilot. The show wasn't even about Krypto.

Superpup was really Bark Bent and worked at the Daily Bugle. Obviously not the one where Spider-man would eventually work. His friend at the office was Pamela Poodle.
All of the actors on the series were little people. The star of the show was Billy Curtis. He was also in the movie "Superman and the Mole Men" with George Reeves. Kind of makes you think he was destined to play in the pilot.
Superpup and Superboy pilots were released on VHS.




In the 1960's "Batman" brought in Batmania. With their success the same team returned to comics for another hopeful hit. They had a possible hit with Dick Tracy. It star was Ray MacDonnell. He went on to fame not as Dick Tracy but as Joe Martin on the soap opera "All My Children." One of his co-stars in the pilot was young Eve Plumb. She is of course known as Jan Brady from the Brady bunch. I think that William Dozier could have had an even bigger hit with the series then he had with Batman. Dick Tracy was one character who had a bigger rogues gallery then Batman.

In the same year Mr. Dozier tried a pilot with another DC character. It was Wonder Woman. The star is Ellie Wood Walker who played it for strictly laughs. If their aim was to make a bad comedy then they were a success.

Eventually they settled on doing a two part episode on Batman with the Green Hornet. They then spun the Hornet off on to his own series. There was one twist to this. Batman was a comedy and Green Hornet was a half hour action/adventure. It was really pretty good. It had a great theme song and gave many their first look at Bruce Lee as Kato. 1987 was the year that we saw the ABC show "Once A Hero." This wasn't really an unsold pilot. It actually made it to series. It wasn't too bad. The network was high on the series and critics loved it. But it was beat in the ratings every week by "My Sister Sam" and "227." The show was good but it was a timeslot failure. It lasted only three weeks. It is said that Adam West was the guest star in the unaired 4th episode.
The series was about how comic book character Captain Justice (Jeff Lester) became real and now fought crime in our world. He was helped by his creator Abner Beavis played by Milo O'Shea and young comic book fan played by Josh Blake. If this series is ever put on DVD you should see it.


Perhaps the most infamous of superhero unaired pilots is "Aquaman." All of you may now know that it was to be a spin-off of "Smallville." The WB (now CW) was actually going to buy it as a series but changed their minds when they merged with UPN and became the CW. There were talks about changing the title to "Mercy Reef" if it was aired. Aquaman has built in name recognition. To have changed the name may have doomed the series. Sometimes it is better to not have a series at all if the one you do have has failed.

Its star was Justin Hartley and also had Lou Diamond Phillips and Ving Rhames. While the series didn't happen this was one of the most viewed unaired pilots ever. They did release it on iTunes and it was one of their more popular TV shows that was downloaded. It was also released on DVD as an incentive to buy a Smallville DVD set. All that promotion and they still never gave Aquaman his own show. They did give Justin Hartley honorary mention by casting him as Green Arrow in "Smallville." He has done a great job with the character and I hope they will spin Green Arrow off into his how series.

The Brave and the Bold: the Series

Well I finally got the time to watch the Brave and the Bold episode that I taped. I was busy and had to tape it. Also, I have a cousin who is a Batman fan and his family doesn't have cable. I told him I would tape it for him so he can watch the series later.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the show start at the end of an adventure that Batman had with Green Arrow. I am sure that Adama of Dispatches From The Arrowcave loved seeing that. However, I hope this doesn't mean that we won't see a full adventure with Bats and GA. They may be showing the partial adventures as to get in a team-up with as close to all of the DC characters as they can.
As much as I don't care for the new Blue Beetle I have to say that he worked well in this episode. I do think he needs a better costume. One that is closer to the classic look of one of the older Blue Beetles. I know a completely different one was needed to distinguish him from the Steve Ditko designed Beetle but a change is needed. Now that he is here to stay it will help old BB fans like myself warm up to him.
I really liked this episode which surprised me. Not only am I not a fan of the new Blue Beetle but I was not a big fan of "animated" space adventures. But this episode won me over. I would get rid of the voice over that makes it seem like Batman is writing it all in his journal. Still I can't wait to see the next episode.

The Last Days

Anyone who reads my sites by now should know at least two things. One is that above all else I am a Christian and two is that I am a fan of comic books. Recently while surfing the net I came across these pages from the Kitchen Sink Publication of the comic book "666: A Preview of the Coming Apocalypse" that was published in 1989 with art and script by Dan Clowes. The book seems to have been done tongue in cheek but Mr. Clowes seems to know at least the book of Revelations as all of this was predicted in that book of the Bible to come about in the last days.
However I am posting this as serious as I want as many as possible to avoid this time in Earth's history. I know I don't want to live through it. So here are a few pages from that book. A couple of places I have edited the images as I don't think it is appropriate for general family type viewing that I try to keep my sites.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Lancelot Link Secret Chimp

Yes it is Saturday morning and time for the Saturday morning cartoons. Up today is one show that you either love or hate. It is Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp. Someone had the idea to take the TV show Get Smart and do it on Saturday morning with chimps in all of the roles. Growing up I hated this show. The only thing I liked was the opening credits. Lancelot sounded like a bad impersonation of Humphrey Bogart and would much rather watch the drawn cartoons. Halfway through I would always turn the channel. Still watching them in small doses brings back a smile to me. Here is Lancelot Link Secret Chimp in the Royal Foil. The first video is the great opening and the other is the story.

Monkees Images

Well yesterday's post got me in a Monkees kind of mood. So here are some Monkees related images. Below is an ad for their album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd."
Below is a page from TV Guide from September 1968. Highlighted is the description of the latest Monkees episode. The important part of it for Monkees fans is that it also tells how it is the last episode of the series and "I Dream of Jeannie" takes over the slot next week.

The New Monkees...Again?

Over at The Sun it is reported that Simon Fuller, the man behind such groups as the Spice Girls and S Club 7,will put together another group based on the Monkees. Click on The Sun to read the article. It tells how he plans to make it more raunchy then the original. It also gives an error filled background on the show. First they say the Monkees started out as a drama and became a reality-variety production. It was never a drama. It was always a comedy. They did try to make it a variety show but failed. They say that they starred for 5 years. The show only lasted from the fall of 1966 to spring of 1968. However, I will cut them some slack on that as the search started in 1965 and the group lasted till 1970.

I first heard of this in an alert from The Monkees Home Page.


Will this be as big a hit as the first series? Will it tank like the New Monkees did? I don't know but it will be fun to see.

I found these fictional characters on e-bay who had runs for out highest office. Some were bigger then most but their companies or publicity agents threw their hats in the ring for them. Remember today is election day. So go out and place your vote.

Video trouble

Wondering if anyone is having trouble watching the videos I place on this blog. I am.  It only plays 2 secnods and then stops.  I can't find the help in bloggers helps screens or on you tube.  Let me know if you are having problms or not so I know if it is just me. If you know of a way to fix it please tell me. Thanks!
